On August 13, 1942 the Manhattan Engineer District was established. Colonel James C. Marshall was the initial head. In the following interview, he discusses the military involvement in the Manhattan Project and the challenges of security funds.
After a month, on September 17, 1942 General Leslie R. Groves was the official head of the MED. Groves was a good engineer, however, he was not a scientist and he was aware of that. He put Robert Oppenheimer as the project’s scientific director.

“He is a genius, a real genius. While Lawrence is very bright he’s not a genius, just a good hard worker. Why, Oppenheimer knows about everything. He can talk to you about anything you bring up. Well not exactly. I guess there are a few things he doesn;t know about. he doesn’t know anything about sports” -

They decided to built the laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico. The centrifuge project was cancelled, and the gaseous diffusion, the pile, and the electromagnetic method started to be full-scale.
